Remember when you were younger, and a single eyelash would fall on our cheek? Then you would pick it up with your finger, make a wish, and blow on it? If it flew away then that meant your wish would come true.
That is a perfect example of eyelash shedding. Something that happens to all of us and is quite normal, especially when spring comes around. Believe it or not but everyone sheds from 2-5 lashes a day.
It is more frequent during spring because our bodies are preparing for warmer
temperatures and weather. While this happens, our body increases oil production to keep our hair and skin hydrated. This leads to shedding.
Don’t worry though. Our lashes fall out in cycles and are completely replenished in 60-90 days. New lashes have already been growing to replace those that fall out.
Although you can’t prevent lashes from shedding, here are some things you can do to help you deal with it.
- Keep it clean. Make sure to always keep your eye area clean. Wash off any and all makeup - eye shadow, mascara, eyeliner - because letting them stay on can make lashes dry and brittle. Then pat or dab at your eyelids. Never rub, scrub or pull at it.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes. Doing anything vigorous to your eyes will surely make your lashes fall off. Also, avoid tugging at them. When using a lash curler, position it near the roots. Clamp straight down, then open the lash curler straight up. Don’t wiggle, pull or move the curler.
- Yes, you can massage them. The massage should be done gently and in a circular motion. Use your pinky finger to avoid applying too much pressure. A massage stimulates blood flow as well as the hair follicles along your lash lines, making them more active. It also helps eyelashes grow stronger.
- Condition your lashes. Doing this coats and seals each eyelash. It blocks off drying agents or other natural forms of debris in the air. You can use petroleum jelly or some natural oils like olive oil or Vitamin E. Use your finger or a cotton swab to dab a small amount along the upper lash line.
- Use an eyelash enhancing serum. This acts as both a conditioner and a growth accelerator for your lashes. The ingredients in an eyelash serum help your lashes become longer and stronger. And each one plays a special role in creating the ideal environment for healthy lashes to thrive.
So the next time you notice an eyelash on your cheek, there’s no need to wish for longer, more beautiful lashes. All you need to do is take care of the ones you already have.
